Lamborghini Is Going Hybrid-Electric To Keep V10, V12 Engines Alive

Lamborghini wants to use naturally-aspirated V10 and V12 engines for as long as it can, even if that means attaching electric motors to them.

In a move that goes against the prevailing industry trend of engine downsizing and forced induction technologies, Lamborghini plans to electrify its V10 and V12 engines for its next-generation supercars, which is to say the next Huracán and Aventador will be hybrids in one form or another.

Lamborghini’s technical director, Maurizio Reggiani, revealed to Autocar that the comapny will use hybrid engines for its next sports cars and that it has been working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop carbon fiber bodywork that can store energy. He stated:

“We will continue to choose natural aspiration for the super-sports cars. In the future, we will need to take account of fuel consumption and emissions. I am convinced the naturally aspirated engine coupled with a hybrid system can be the right answer.”

The next Aventador will likely have a hybrid powertrain when it arrives by 2020, while the replacement for the Huracán could get a 10-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. With regards to the former Reggiani added:

“We need to reinvent this icon without [losing] the characteristics of the current car: carbon fiber, the V12 naturally aspirated engine and other components. Looking forward, if it is a hybrid then in what ways can we compensate for its weight?”

Despite being committed to hybrid technology, Lamborghini is not ready to introduce an electric model because the right technology apparently doesn’t exist yet.

Lamborghini Urus SUV Is Getting Crazier Performance Version

Because the regular Urus just isn’t hot enough…

A high-performance version of the popular Lamborghini Urus SUV is reportedly under development.

Citing a well-placed source within the automaker, Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman claims the super duper Lamborghini could arrive by 2022. Unfortunately, he hasn’t able to get any details.

The regular Urus shares platforms with the Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne and sources its power from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces 641 horsepower (478 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet, channeled to the four wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission. A more powerful version would make sense considering that hotter versions of other Lamborghinis are either already available or coming soon.

The Bentley Bentayga Speed features a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 that pumps out 626 hp and 664 lb-ft. of torque, while the upcoming Porsche Turbo S E-Hybrid Cayenne is expected to make at least 677 hp and 626 lb-ft. Needless to say, Lamborghini’s engineers already have some truly capable engines to work with.

A sportier, more aerodynamic design and superior handling will also be part of the deal, as is a more race-orientated interior.

Lamborghini Sales Soar Thanks To Urus SUV

The Urus is a smash hit, meaning there will be more vehicles like it.

If you had issue with Lamborghini having an SUV, then be prepared for even more disappointment. The Urus has been so successful that the supercar company will likely make more SUVs.

According to Automotive News, Lamborghini sales “soared” by 51 percent to 5,750 units in 2018, thanks in large part to the introduction of the Urus. Lamborghini’s first SUV comprised nearly 31 percent (1,761 units) of that total.

Americans especially love the Urus — approximately 9 percent (500 units) of all Lamborghini sales were Urus models sold in the US.

In fact, the Urus has proven so popular that, according to Lamborghini exec Federico Foschini, the model has so many orders that it will take 10 to 12 months to fulfill them. He forecasts 7,000 to 8,000 in total sales for 2019.

The backlog seems to be artificial, however, so don’t expect to see the striking super SUV everywhere you turn. “We don’t want to flood the market, because we are still in a luxury segment and we need to keep control of the offer compared to the demand,” Foschini told Automotive News.

Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder Drops Its Top For Summer

The Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder has been revealed just in time for summer.

The convertible version of the Huracán EVO features the same upgrades as the coupe, including a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 that delivers 640 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, a vehicle dynamic control system, and aerodynamic enhancements.

More than 250 pounds heavier than the coupe, the Huracán EVO Spyder is only 0.2 seconds slower to 62 mph (100 km/h) with a sprint of 3.1 seconds and has a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h). It boasts the new Lamborghini Piattaforma Inerziale 2.0 system, which offers “next-generation vehicle dynamic control” by utilizing a set of accelerators and gyroscope sensors located in the car’s crenter of gravity to monitor real-time lateral, longitudinal and vertical accelerations, as well as roll, pitch and yaw rate.

Both the coupe and Spyder also feature rear-wheel steering and four-wheel torque vectoring, taking advantage of the vehicle dynamic control system. Interestingly, the convertible Evo boasts five times as much downforce as the original Huracán Spyder despite having a soft top.

Exterior updates include a new front bumper with larger air intakes, a new exhaust system that’s placed higher in the rear bumper, and new 20” Aesir wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires, while the interior houses a new 8.4” HMI touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder goes on sale in spring 2019 with a starting price of $287,400 in the United States.
