Bentley has introduced a plug-in hybrid version of the Bentayga as part of the Volkswagen Group’s shift towards electrification. The company bills it as the world’s first luxury hybrid,” but is it really?
There is no argument, however, that the Bentayga hybrid is Bentley’s “first step towards electrification” and its most efficient vehicle to date. Power is provided by a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a new V6 gas engine that’s mated to an electric motor that also serves as a generator, allowing the large SUV to travel purely on electricity for over 31 miles (50 km) in the European cycle. It takes up to 7.5 hours to charge the battery using a domestic household socket and just 2.5 hours with a quick charger.
Visually, the Bentayga plug-in hybrid looks almost identical to the gasoline-powered Bentayga models, with a “hybrid” badge on the tailgate, front doors and sill plates being the most conspicuous exterior differentiator.
There story is a little bit different inside, where the auto-stop/start button has been replaced with a hybrid-themed drive mode selector with three driving modes — EV, Hybrid and Hold. The first two modes are self-explanatory; the Hold mode maintains the battery’s state of charge in all operations.
The Bentley Bentayga was likely a result of regulatory requirements rather than genuine interest from the company’s wealthy clients, who are generally not swayed by fuel-efficiency or gas prices. Sales begin in the second half of 2018.
Bentley Bentayga Speed Nabs “World’s Fastest SUV” Title

Bentley proudly boasts that, with a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h), the Bentayga Speed is the world’s fastest production SUV.
The 6.0-liter W12 engine found in the standard Bentayga has been tweaked to put out 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, providing enough propulsion to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in just 3.9 seconds.
It’s worth noting that the 641 hp, V8-powered Lamborghini Urus is actually lighter and more powerful yet has the same top speed. The fact that the two SUVs are closely related makes us think there were some politics behind this head-scratching outcome.
In addition to the extra power, the Bentayga Speed provides a more dynamic driving experience than the regular Bentayga thanks to a retuned Sport mode and a stiffened suspension, while the exhaust note is throatier.
Designer gave the exterior a performance-theme characterized by dark-tint headlights, blacked-out grilles, a tailgate spoiler, and unique 22-inch wheels available in three finishes. Inside, one finds contrast stitching on the diamond-quilted upholstery and Alcantara trim, the first time the material has been used in a Bentayga.
The Bentley Bentayga Speed goes on sale in the second half of 2019 after making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
Bentley’s First Electric Car Is Coming In 2023
The good news is that a Bentley electric vehicle is on the way; the bad news is that you’ll have to wait a very long time for one.
Bentley isn’t foolish enough to bet against electric cars, but it sure is taking its sweet time fielding an EV of its own.
The company believes battery technology hasn’t reached a point where it can power its electric cars and won’t get to such a level until 2023 to 2025. In an interview with , Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark stated:
“The problem is when you get to our segment with the size of our vehicles and the frontal area we push through, current battery power density limits the size of the car you can offer with credible driving range.”
Despite hinting at the possibility of an electric sports car with the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept, Bentley’s first electric will actually not be a sports car. Hallmark doesn’t think the company needs a sports car seeing as the Volkswagen Group, which the British automaker belongs to, already has enough of them.
An earlier report claimed that the car might borrow its platform from Audi and Porsche, a platform custom-tailored for electric vehicles.
New Bentley Continental GT Convertible Debuts With More Speed

Virtually identical to the its fixed roof counterpart, the all-new 2019 Bentley Continental GT Convertible arrives with a new flowing exterior design, a comprehensively revamped interior and an engine worthy of the Bentley badge
Buyers will have the choice of seven colors and eight interior finishes for the folding soft top, which can be raised or lowered in 19 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph (48 mph). They can also expect a quieter ride seeing as the roof has been re-engineered with more insulation to block out unwanted noises.
In fact, Bentley boasts that the new Continental GT Convertible is as quiet as the previous Continental GT Coupe.
As expected, the interior is appointed with the finest leathers and genuine wood, as well as a new technical finish with the kind of machined aluminum that’s typically found on Swiss watches. Yet, despite the classic luxury look and feel, it comes with plenty of cutting-edge tech, including an all-digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system mounted on a three-side panel that can be rotated to show three analog gauges or a wood veneer that blends in with the rest of the dashboard, and an available 18 speaker audio system with a glass-shattering 2,200 watts of power.
Power comes from a 6.0L 12-cylinder engine that produces 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, good for a sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 207 mph (333 km/h).
The Continental GT Convertible is five percent stiffer and a bit lighter than its predecessor. To keep everything under control at high speeds, it uses the same 48-volt roll control system found in the Coupe that can electronically actuate the anti-roll bars at each axle for better handling control. Stopping power is provided in large part by massive 10-piston brakes at the front.
Sales begin in the first half of 2019.
