The Volkswagen Group (VAG) managed to sell 5.04 million vehicles in the first half of 2015, making it the largest automaker in the world. It can’t afford to rest easy, however, because Toyota is breathing down its neck.
It’s a very close race between Toyota and Volkswagen for the global sales crown, with only a 20,000-car gap separating the two automotive giants. VAG (including truck-makers MAN and Scania) sold 5.04 million vehicles compared to Toyota’s (including Daihatsu and Hino) 5.02 million units.
As impressive as those figures are, they are actually lower than 2014’s results. VAG and Toyota saw a decline of 0.5% and 1.5%, respectively, in the same period last year, while General Motors’ sales dropped by 1.2% to 4.86 million units, enough for third place in the heated sales race.
As a reminder, Toyota was the largest automaker at the end of 2014 with 10.23 million vehicles sold, followed by the Volkswagen Group with 10.14 million units and General Motors with 9.92 million. It would be interesting to see if the Japanese automaker will retain its title once 2015 closes.
2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE Is Faster With New 10-Speed Auto
Because excellence is not always good enough…
The 2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE is now faster than ever thanks the application of a new 10 speed automatic transmission.
According to Chevy, the new automatic transmission makes the critically-acclaimed sports car faster than the manual equipped version, allowing it to lap General Motors’ 2.9-mile Milford Road Course more than one half second faster.
Engineers were also able to shave off several seconds from their previous Nurburgring lap times set with the six-speed manual ZL1 1LE.
“This transmission is optimized for speed,” said Camaro Chief Engineer Mark Dickens. “With unique Track Mode calibrations and 10 gears, you are always in the perfect gear when rolling on or off the throttle. You may not be a professional race car driver, but now you can shift like one.”
The calibrations for the transmission, electronic limited-slip differential and traction control system were tweaked to achieve the best performance, while the front and rear Multimatic DSSV dampers have been tuned to accommodate the quicker shifts in weight transfer.
As a reminder, the Camaro ZL1 is powered by a supercharged 6.2L V8 that produces 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft. of torque. Pricing for the 2019 Camaro ZL1 1LE starts at $64,695 in the United States,. Opting for the new 10-speed auto adds $1,595 to the price.
GMC Is Considering Electric Pickup Truck To Rival Ford And Tesla
GM doesn’t want to be outdone by its crosstown rival or Tesla.
Just one week after Ford confirmed that it was developing an all-electric F-150, General Motors has revealed that that its pickup trucks will likely also go electric.
Duncan Aldred, vice president of the GMC brand, confirmed to about the possibility of an all-electric GMC truck, stating “certainly, it’s something we’re considering.” He did not mention when we would see such a model.
As customers continue to shift away from cars, Trucks have become an increasingly important segment for the Detroit Big Three. Ford, GM and FCA presumably also have their sights on Tesla’s upcoming electric pickup, which could disrupt their dominance.

This Crossover Concept Previews Cadillac’s First-Ever EV
It came out of nowhere and shocked the Detroit Auto Show.
Cadillac followed up the unveiling of the Cadillac XT6 large crossover with a preview of its first-ever all-electric vehicle.
Taking the form of premium electric crossover, the concept is striking and likely also hints at the brand’s future design direction.
“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” said Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac. “It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.”

The surprising reveal comes not long after General Motors announced that Cadillac will lead its electric vehicle strategy, effectively making it the automaker’s Tesla-fighter. Specific details such as power or features aren’t known, nor do we have a definitive timetable as to when the production model will be ready, but it will be the first GM vehicle to be built on the company’s forthcoming dedicated EV platform and should offer level 4 autonomous capabilities at the least.
In essence, not only will the vehicle be Cadillac’s first step into the EV world, but it will also push it deeper into the autonomous realm.
