Tesla’s most affordable car appears to take safety seriously.
The Tesla Model 3 scored top marks in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program, receiving five stars in every crash category including frontal crash, side crash and rollover.
The electric sedan also achieved a five-star rating in every subcategory — side barrier, side pole, etc. — as well as top ratings for all occupants. It joins Tesla Model S and Model X, as well as a slew of new cars, at the top.
There have been several reports of drivers and passengers walking away mostly unscathed from devastating Model 3 crashes, and now we know how.
However, as impressive as these results are, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash scenarios are more more challenging than the NHTSA and will be more telling of just how safe the Model 3 is.
New, 2020 Kia Soul EV Has 243 Mile (391 Km) Driving Range
Kia’s quirky crossover joins the high-range electric vehicle group.
The EPA has given the 2020 Kia Soul EV a driving range of up to 243 miles (391 km) on a single charge, placing it in the same class as the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV and Nissan LEAF e+, all of which get over 200 miles (322 km).
In fact, the Soul EV uses the same 64 kWh battery pack as the Kona Electric and Niro. Power is provided by an electric motor that generates 201-horsepower and 291 lb-ft. of torque and can be modulated with four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Eco+, which automatically adjust power output, regenerative braking, climate control settings, and set speed limits to help manage overall efficiency.
Similar to the Niro and Kona EVs, it will charge at around 100kW for at least the first 50 percent of charge. A DC Fast Charge port comes standard.
The 2020 Kia Soul EV goes on sale in the second half of 2019.
Mercedes-Benz EQC Electric SUV Is Sold Out For 2019
This is a good problem to have in the automotive industry if you’re not starved for cash.
Mercedes-Benz has sold out of its first production run for the EQC all-electric SUV, and it likely won’t be able to keep up with demand until after 2021 or later.
The order book for the EQC opened in 2018, but deliveries began in 2019.
“We are sure that we will not be able to meet the demand in 2019 and probably not by 2020,” Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche told German news outlet . “But we do everything we can to achieve the maximum capacity.”
The EQC joins the Tesla Model X and Jaguar F-Pace, and Audi e-Tron in the growing premium electric SUV segment. Its not clear how many units will be built in 2019 or 2020, making it difficult to determine how it compares with the Model X, but the German automaker limited its production due to concerns about warranty costs.
EQC aside, Mercedes-Benz has lofty goals for the electric car segment and plans to field at least 10 electric vehicles by 2022.
Tesla Vehicles Get A Sentry, Plus Dog-Safe Mode
Potential thieves will have to deal with a classical German composer.
Tesla has introduced a new ‘Sentry Mode’ security feature and a dog-friendly mode that should make its vehicles even more interesting than they already are.
Sentry Mode keep an eye on the car by using the vehicles’ 360-degree cameras to record any potentially mischievous individuals in the vicinity. According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the car will automatically play Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor if there is any disturbance.
Engineers also built upon the Cabin Overheat Protection system, which keeps the interior at a safe temperature for hours when the car is off.
As for doggie, the Model 3, Model S and Model X now have a dedicated “dog mode” that plays music and keeps the air conditioner activated when your canine friend is in the vehicle alone. It also displays a message that reads reads “I’m fine my owner will be right back” on the touchscreen, a provision likely intend to help avoid insurance claims if a concerned citizen or police officer mistakenly feels the need to break into the vehicle to rescue an animal.
All of the features were implemented via over-the-air software updates, so no need to buy a new Tesla to have them.
