Tesla’s most affordable car appears to take safety seriously.
The Tesla Model 3 scored top marks in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program, receiving five stars in every crash category including frontal crash, side crash and rollover.
The electric sedan also achieved a five-star rating in every subcategory — side barrier, side pole, etc. — as well as top ratings for all occupants. It joins Tesla Model S and Model X, as well as a slew of new cars, at the top.
There have been several reports of drivers and passengers walking away mostly unscathed from devastating Model 3 crashes, and now we know how.
However, as impressive as these results are, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash scenarios are more more challenging than the NHTSA and will be more telling of just how safe the Model 3 is.
VW I.D. Roomzz Concept Previews An Electric Three-Row SUV
The latest concept in Volkswagen’s I.D. family is a people-hauler first and foremost.
Volkswagen is cooking up a flagship electric SUV, and the VW I.D. Roomzz Concept is an indication of what’s to come.
Based on a stretched version of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) platform that underpins the I.D. Crozz concept, the Roomzz is a full-size SUV with three-rows of seating for up to eight occupants. More than that, the seats can be reconfigured to deliver a lounge-like experience.
Other interior highlights include a digital, glass-front panel, and massive screens for the instrument cluster and dashboard infotainment.
Level 4 autonomous capabilities means the I.D. Roomzz can drive itself in certain areas and under certain conditions without an active driver. Power is provided by two electric motors, one on each axle to provide all-wheel drive capability, energized by a 82-kWh battery.
The electric drivetrain generates a total of 302 horsepower, can accelerate the SUV from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.6 seconds on route to a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h), and provides a driving range of up to 280 miles (451 km) on Europe’s WLTP cycle, or 475 km (295 mi) under NEFZ in China.
The production version of the Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz concept is slated to debut sometime in 2020, around the same time as the production versions of the I.D. Crozz and I.D. hatchback. The Microbus-inspired I.D. Buzz and I.D. Vizzion sedan will follow suit in 2022.
Infiniti Qs Inspiration Concept Shows Off Minimalist Design
A production version will eventually join Infiniti’s lineup.
Infiniti has revealed the Qs Inspiration Concept, which previews a future production vehicle that will be available with both EV and hybrid powertrains.
According to the company, the sedan will ride on a new flexible platform that accommodates electrified models and uses an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain.
Designers gave the Infiniti Qs Inspiration a blunt front fascia with tiny, jagged-edged headlights and small openings in place of a traditional open grille, as well as a very short trunk, possibly with a liftback configuration.
The interior is said to provide an “elevated driving position,” an odd fit considering sport sedans have traditionally focused on low-slung, highly bolstered seats.
Looking closer, the Infiniti Qs Inspiration looks a lot like the Q Inspiration concept from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, which probably isn’t a coincidence. Both are sedans that preview Infiniti’s future design, featuring minimalist grilles and coupe-like overall aesthetic. The major difference appears to be that the latter has a more curvaceous rear end.
Audi’s Tesla Model 3-Fighter Is Coming In 2023
Telsa’s popular sedan will not go unanswered.
Having kicked off its electric vehicle blitz with the e-tron SUV, Audi is now gearing up to introduce an electric sedan that will rival the Tesla Model 3.
Speaking to at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi design boss Marc Lichte revealed that German automaker will release the new model sometime in 2023. It’s expected to be about the same size as the A4 and will ride on same PPE platform as the upcoming E-tron GT.
“There will be [electric] SUVs and low-floor sporty cars such as the E-tron GT, which is our ‘halo’ car,” Lichte stated. “There will be an E-tron GT in the [A4- sized] segment as well. We’re working on this right now.”
Audi’s Tesla Model-fighting electric sedan won’t arrive until Audi releases the e-tron Sportback electric SUV and the smaller Q4 e-tron SUV, which the company predicts will be one of its most popular electric vehicles, with sales on par with the Q3 crossover.
