Audi and Hyundai have teamed up to develop hydrogen fuel cells in an effort to bring the technology to the masses in a timely manner.
The two companies will share patents and have access to each other’s non-competitive components.
Audi is already working on a sporty, hydrogen-powered SUV and plans to begin small-scale production at the beginning of the next decade. It has been developing the technology that will power the model in-house, so it looks like the tie-up with Hyundai will place a greater emphasis on the mass production of other vehicles further into the future.

In contrast to the sentiments expressed by most other automakers, both companies see a bright future for hydrogen, especially as the technology pertain to larger vehicles that would otherwise require an massive battery pack to offer an acceptable amount of zero-emissions driving range. Short refueling times is another advantage hydrogen-powered vehicles have over battery-powered electric vehicles.
Peter Mertens, Audi’s board member for technical development, stated:
“The fuel cell is the most systematic form of electric driving and thus a potent asset in our technology portfolio for the emission-free premium mobility of the future.”
A joint statement published by Audi and Hyundai revealed that they are exploring the terms and benefits of a more far-reaching collaboration in the field of hydrogen but not when we’ll see the first jointly-develop products on the road. There is a good chance that Hyundai’s sister brand Kia will also benefit from this partnership.
Audi e-tron’s 204-Miles Electric Driving Range Is Disappointing

Audi has announced final specifications and launch details for the new e-tron SUV, and there are some disappointments.
While a 204 miles (328 km) driving range will prove sufficient for most commuters, it is significantly lower than the 295 mile (475 km) range you get with the Model X. According to Audi, average buyers of premium vehicles only travel around 30 miles (48 km) per day, so this shouldn’t be an issue.
The e-tron is also not as quick as the Model X. Its 402 horsepower in ‘Boost Mode’ allows drivers to accelerate to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, but the Tesla has a zero-to-60 mph benchmark of 4.7 seconds in standard form or 3.5 seconds for the Performance.
On a brighter note, it can add 54 miles (87 km) of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a DC fast charge and 163 miles (262 km) in 30 minutes.
Audi e-tron prices start at $74,800 in the United States, which is nearly $6,000 less than the cheapest Model X.
Audi’s Tesla Model 3-Fighter Is Coming In 2023

Having kicked off its electric vehicle blitz with the e-tron SUV, Audi is now gearing up to introduce an electric sedan that will rival the Tesla Model 3.
Speaking to at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi design boss Marc Lichte revealed that German automaker will release the new model sometime in 2023. It’s expected to be about the same size as the A4 and will ride on same PPE platform as the upcoming E-tron GT.
“There will be [electric] SUVs and low-floor sporty cars such as the E-tron GT, which is our ‘halo’ car,” Lichte stated. “There will be an E-tron GT in the [A4- sized] segment as well. We’re working on this right now.”
Audi’s Tesla Model-fighting electric sedan won’t arrive until Audi releases the e-tron Sportback electric SUV and the smaller Q4 e-tron SUV, which the company predicts will be one of its most popular electric vehicles, with sales on par with the Q3 crossover.

With the A4 Allroad serving as its only wagon available in the United States and Canada, Audi could be gearing up to capitalize on the small renaissance in the wagon segment.
A tweet () by the German automaker hints at more of its wagon crossing the Atlantic, with some reports claiming that the A6 Avant at the very least will be sold alongside the rugged, more offroad-oriented A4 Allroad.
The performance-oriented RS6 Avant with its twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 may also come to America, giving practical-minded driving enthusiasts a compelling option to consider.
The North American-spec A6 Avant could go on sale sometime in the second half of 2019 as 2020 model year vehicle as Audi’s an answer to Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon and Volvo V90. How will you configure yours?
