Volvo Is Doing Great With XC40 Crossover, Demand Exceeds Expectations

New, 2019 Volvo XC40 Inscription SUV

Surprise, surprise! Volvo has found great success with its most affordable crossover in a market hungry for crossovers and SUVs.

Released in November 2017, the XC40 is Volvo’s first model in the fast-growing premium compact SUV segment and competes with the likes of the BMW X1, Jaguar E-Pace, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The Swedish automaker received over 80,000 orders in the first half of 2018, exceeding expectations and prompting it to boost production at its Ghent manufacturing plant in Europe and Luqiao plant in order to keep up with demand.

Volvo will capitalize on the popularity of its new smaller models by introducing several new models based on its Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), including a new V40. Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, stated:

“The XC40’s success has surpassed even our highest expectations. The small SUV segment is the fastest-growing segment in the industry now, and with these additional CMA-based models we expect to benefit further from that growth.”

The company’s future compact models will arrive with fully electric versions and will be sold globally in all major regions.

All-New, 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV Is A Baby Blazer

New Chevrolet Trailblazer Small SUV, front angle

The new Trailblazer is perhaps not what you expected. It won’t be blazing any trails.

General Motors has revealed an all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer for North America, reviving a nameplate that hasn’t been used in over 10 years.

First unveiled in China last month, the Trailblazer is closely related to the new Buick Encore GX and slots between the Chevrolet Trax and Equinox. Its aggressive exterior styling clearly takes cues from the new Blazer, with key highlights including a squarish shape and a tall grille.

“The Trailblazer’s great design enables more personalization,” stated Chevy’s car and crossover marketing director, Steve Majoros. “Trailblazer is a continuation of the design language for Chevy’s crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.”

Whereas its predecessor was a traditional SUV with real off-road capabilities, the new Trailblazer is optimized for city driving. It’s not the off-road beast most hoped for, and it probably can’t be turned into one.

The long list of standard safety features include Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, while Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Park Assist and a High Definition Rear Vision Camera are optional.

Sales of the all-new, 2012 Chevrolet Trailblazer begin in the first half of 2020.

New, 2020 Buick Encore GX Grows Buick’s Crossover Lineup

New Buick Encore GX Small SUV, White

The new Buick crossover slots between the smaller Encore and larger Envision in the United States and Canada.

General Motors has expanded the Encore lineup with the addition of the Buick Encore GX.

With its extended wheelbase, the Encore GX slots between the regular Encore and larger Envision and Enclave crossovers, measuring 5.0 cubic feet larger than its twin and 3.0 cubes smaller than the Envision.

Designers applied Buick’s latest styling language to both the exterior and interior. A chrome surround follows the curvature of the side glass and blends into the rear hatch, while a large grille with chrome decor cuts into the headlights. The modern interior offers typical infotainment tech, including a large dash-mounted touchscreen, sizable instrument cluster screen, and even a head-up display system.

The Encore GX comes standard with a bevvy of safety features, notably forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, front pedestrian braking, and automatic emergency braking. A rear camera mirror and surround camera system are optional extras.

According to GM, almost 90 percent of Buick’s U.S. and Canadian sales come from SUVs and crossovers. The Encore GX, as redundant as it might seem, gives the brand four models in the highly lucrative segment. Sales begin in early 2020.

In related news, Buick may stop selling cars to focus only on crossovers.
