Infiniti’s yacht on wheels, the QX80 SUV, has been updated for the 2018 model year, gaining a revised look that’s more in line with the company’s other models, more premium materials, and better convenience and safety tech.

Infiniti chose the Dubai Auto Show to introduce the 2018 QX80 because of the nameplate’s popularity in the Middle East. It’s a not a brand-new model, but it does look fresher than before thanks to a taller and wider grille flanked by sharper-looking headlights, a piece of chrome trim on the lower bumper, new taillights, and revised trim elements.

Changes to the interior include a new steering wheel, new stitching patterns on key places, new wood trim options, additional upholstery colors, and upgraded materials.

The land yacht’s rear entertainment system has been upgraded, with the screens in the backs of the front seats growing in size from 7 to 8 inches. It can now be accessed via the cockpit’s 8-inch touchscreen.

There are no major mechanical modifications to report, so the updated QX80 carries on with a 5.6-liter V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque, sent to either the rear wheels or — optionally — all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

In the United States, RWD models deliver a fuel economy rating of 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, while the four-wheel drive version gets 13 mpg city and 19 mpg highway.

The QX80’s safety tech has also been improved, providing a list of new driver-assist systems that include Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Forward Emergency Braking, Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Intervention, and Backup Collision Intervention.

The 2018 Infiniti QX80 starts at $64,750 in the U.S. for the two-wheel drive model and $67,850 for the four-wheel drive version.

Infiniti Diving Into Electric Cars In 2021

Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept, white

Infiniti has announced plans to add electrified models to its lineup starting in 2021.

Nissan Chief Executive Officer Hiroto Saikawa made the announcement at the Automotive News World Congress, stating that Infiniti will offer a mix of fully-electric and hybrid e-Power vehicles. He didn’t reveal the models that will get electric powertrains but expects that a mix of those “electrified vehicles will comprise more than half of Infiniti global sales by 2025.”

The first all-electric vehicle will arrive sometime in 2021, and the hybrid vehicles will utilize Infiniti’s proprietary e-Power technology, which features a small gasoline engine that charges battery without the need of using a plug. Saikawa said:

“Customers can expect beautifully designed vehicles like the Q Inspiration concept shown in Detroit, with a whole new level of electrified driving performance as an evolution of Infiniti’s current powertrains.”

Considering virtually every luxury automaker is planning to launch all-electric vehicles to compete with Tesla by 2020, and many already offer hybrid vehicles, Infiniti’s plan to launch its first EV in 2021 will make the company late to market. However, with the EV segment still in infancy, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept

At the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Infiniti took the wraps off a concept vehicle that it says previews its future.

Not only does the so-called Q Inspiration Concept preview Infiniti’s new design direction, but it also ushers in a new era of technology for its vehicles.

It features the company’s next-generation ProPILOT system, which supposedly “liberates the driver from mundane and stressful driving situations.” However, because it can be overridden at any time, it doesn’t completely cut the driver out of the equation.

Power is provided by by Infiniti’s new Variable Compression (VC) turbo four that is said to continually transforms, adjusting its compression ratio to optimize power and fuel efficiency. The VC also powers the new QX50 crossover, where it produces 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque in the

Jumping to styling, the Q Inspiration Concept is a four-door sedan with coupe-like profile that’s sleeker, more sculpted and more flowing than any of Infiniti’s current models, even Q60 coupe. Rear-hinged rear doors give excellent access to a futuristic interior.

Christian Meunier, Infiniti Global Division Vice President, stated:

“The premium sedan segment has become rather conservative. The Infiniti Q Inspiration previews something that could appeal to a younger audience, who seek modern design and new technologies to inspire and empower them.”

Although the Q Inspiration Concept is only a design study and isn’t destined for production, there is a chance it will influence the next-generation Q70 sedan or even a spiritual successor the Q45 flagship sedan.
