Prediction: Next Cadillac Escalade Will be a Hybrid

Alright, so this isn’t a prediction as much as it is a near fact. So if you’ve been keeping track of GM’s “movements” lately, you would know that the company has announced a number of hybrid initiative lately.

So far we know that Cadillac’s upcoming flagship sedan, the XTS, will be a hybrid. And just recently, GM announced that it will invest millions in one of its factories to produce hybrid engines. Then the mother of all indicators was announced — the company stated that its next BMW 3-Series fighter, the ATS, and the next Cadillac CTS would have hybrid drivetrains. So apparently the company has gone hybrid crazy, implying that its has achieved a great breakthrough in the design and production of its hybrid technology. But with the fuel-price scare of the recent years and with stricter US EPA standards on the horizon, the General can’t help but to be hybrid crazy.

All of these announcements have rendered my “prediction” that the next Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon would come as (standard) hybrids as nothing more than a near certainty. After all, it is these gas-guzzling beasts that need a hybrid drivetrain the most.

So with improved competencies in hybrid technology, stricter EPA standards soon to take effect and with planned hybrids for the much smaller ATS, CTS and XTS sedans, there is little doubt that GM’s badmouth SUVS would get a hybrid drivetrain as well. Expect an announcement either later this years or early next year.

GM Is Already Developing Hotter Cadillac CT4-V, CT5-V

If you were disappointed by Cadillac’s replacements for the ATS-V and the CTS-V, you weren’t alone. The first CT4-V and the CT5-V models are both significantly less powerful than that their predecessors, but that was all by design. Cadillac promised that the two models were just the beginning of things to come.

The company is already working on true top-of-the-line horsepower flagships for the CT4 and CT5, and they have been spotted undergoing testing at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

The prototypes are fully camouflaged, but we can tell they have more attitude visually than the lesser CT4-V and CT5-V, featuring model-specific body kits that add a different grille, more aggressive front bumpers, and a bigger spoiler out back, among other changes.

As true successors to the ATS-V and the CTS-V, we can also expect them to have more power, a sportier suspension and more capable brakes.

The CT4-based model will likely arrive with a powerful V6 engine, while the CT5-based sedan will get a V8 — possibly the twin-turbocharged, 4.2-liter Blackwing V8 from the CT6-V, which can be tuned to make either 500 or 550 horsepower.

Heck, considering how little we know about either model, a 600 horsepower CT5-V might even be in the cards. GM certainly has the hardware to make it happen.

New Cadillac CT4 Sports Sedan Debuts In Performance CT4-V Guise

There is a new ATS, and ‘CT4’ is it’s name.

Cadillac has unveiled the CT4, its new entry-level sedan and the successor to the ATS sedan.

The company chose to show off the sporty, V-badged variant of the CT4 before the standard version to highlight a new strategy for its critically-acclaimed V-series performance line.

Visually, the CT4-V looks a lot like the new CT5 , featuring a shield-shaped grille flanked by thin, elongated headlights that shit atop vertical daytime running lights. However, unlike the CT5, it doesn’t have an arched, fastback-like roofline, retaining traditional sports sedan proportions that we find less polarizing.

Similarly, the clean and modern interior looks like a miniaturized version of the CT5’s, complete with a shield-shaped insert in the center console. A pair of analog gauges and an information display make up the instrument cluster, while the infotainment system gets a sizable screen that’s nicely integrated into the dashboard. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available.

The CT4-V launches with a turbocharged, 2.7-liter that produces 320 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, sent to the rear-wheels by a 10-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can opt for all-wheel drive at an extra cost, but a manual transmission isn’t likely to be offered anytime soon.

Like the ATS, the CT4 is built on General Motors’ Alpha platform, giving it a 50/50 weight distribution. Other performance highlights include a limited-slip differential, Brembo front brakes, and GM’s lauded Magnetic Ride Control technology, all of which help the driver make the most of the engine’s power.

It’s a driver’s car from the look of things, but the available Super Cruise technology can take over vehicle controls should you get tired of driving. Super Cruise is the only true hands-off, semi-autonomous system currently available in the United States and Canada.

You’re not alone if you thought the CT4-V is weak compared to the outgoing, 460-horsepower ATS-V, but that’s where Cadillac’s new strategy comes into play. The CT4-V is just one of a series CT4 models that will wear the ‘V’ badge. Think of it as the base model of its kind, seeing as a true high-performance CT-V variant is already in the works.

New Cadillac CT5-V Brings A Taste Of V-Series Power

The first CT5-V is not a direct replacement for the mighty CTS-V, but it’s a start.

Less than two months after taking the wraps off the CT5 to the world, Cadillac used an event held in Detroit to show off the hotter, performance-oriented CT5-V, unveiling it alongside the smaller CT4-V.

This CT5-V replaces the highly-regarded CTS-V, but not directly. Based on critically-acclaimed Alpha platform, it dials up the CT5’s performance with a larger 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that produces 355 hp and 400 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,400 rpm. As with the CT4-V, a 10-speed automatic and drives the rear or, as an option, all four wheels.

An electronic limited-slip rear differential, P245/40R19 Michelin Pilot tires, Brembo front brakes, and GM’s lauded Magnetic Ride Control technology help the driver make the most of the engine’s power.

You will be forgiven for thinking those output figures look anemic compared to the 640 hp and 630 lb.-ft. of torque generated by the CTS-V, but fret not! There will be a hotter, more powerful CT5-V, and it will serve as the true successor to the CTS-V. What you see here is is just one of a series of CT5-V models the company has planned, the weakest one probably.

Visually, the new CT5-V stands out from the regular CT5 with mesh inserts in the front bumper, darker trim pieces, a model-specific rear diffuser, and quad exhaust tips. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped by summer-only performance tires.

Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system can ease the chore of highway driving. As the only true hands-off, semi-autonomous system available in North America, it can be used on 208,000 kilometres of highway in both the U.S. and Canada.
