Spy Shots Reveal Jeep Wrangler Pickup Truck Testing

Jeep Wrangler pickup truck

The long-rumored Jeep pickup truck is finally on its way, with new spy photos showing that it’s under development.

Captured by , the photos show the Wrangler-based pickup undergoing some very light off-road testing, and as we all imagined, it’s essentially a regular Wrangler that’s been modified to have a bed.

With both the Wrangler and pickup trucks being super popular, it’s a bit surprising that Jeep has gone so long without a Wrangler pickup. Word on the street is that the vehicle will be offered with a new 2.0L turbocharged four-banger that produces 300 horsepower, a diesel engine and possibly a hybrid powertrain, all using a ZF-sourced automatic transmission.

Jeep’s truck will compete with mid-size trucks like the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins, as well as the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma. Expect it to be more off road-capable than any of the competition.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (owner of Jeep) has announced plans to spend $700 million on retooling the Wrangler’s Toledo, Ohio, plant for the next-gen Wrangler, which is expected to begin production sometime in 2017. The pickup is expected to arrive a year later in 2018.

Next Jeep Grand Cherokee Coming In 2021, Three-Row Jeep At End Of 2020

FCA is gearing up for a Jeep product blitz that includes the Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and an unnamed three-row SUV.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has revealed plans to invest $4.5 billion in five of its Michigan plants to meet growing demand and introduce two new Jeep models.

Approximately $1.6 billion will go to converting the two plants that make up the Mack Avenue Engine Complex into an assembly site for the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, which will be based off the Alfa Romeo platform underpinning the Stelvio and is slated to arrive in the first half of 2020. It will also build an unnamed three-row full-size Jeep alongside the Grand Cheroke and several plug-in hybrid Jeep models.

Little is known about the new three-row full-size SUV, but it will be distinct from the Ram 1500–based Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer that start production in early 2021 and could very well be a longer wheelbase version of the Grand Cherokee.

FCA will introduce plug-in hybrid versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models first, followed by two more hybrid models. Fully electric Jeep battery electric vehicles are also planned.

Is Jeep Working On High-Performance Gladiator Truck?

The Wrangler-based pickup truck may be getting a high-octane makeover for adrenaline junkies.

Jeep is reportedly working on a high-performance Gladiator along the lines of a Ford Ranger Raptor.

According to inside information provided to the , the model will be dubbed the “Hercules” and one-off prototypes of it are currently undergoing testing.

The Gladiator Hercules would also do battle with the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and Toyota Tacoma TRD, even though it will be a more powerful pickup. However, without a proper high-performance mid-size pickup on the market — Ford has ruled out the Ranger Raptor for North America — it could very well have a segment to its own.

Jeep has yet to give the green light, but considering that Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, previously hinted at the idea of a high-performance Gladiator and Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s reputation for making over-the-top high-performance models (Dodge Challenger Demon and the Ram 1500 Rebel, just to name a few), it’s easy to see why such a model is likely to see the light of day.

More power is never a bad thing, if you ask us.

Next Jeep Grand Cherokee Will Offer Three Rows Of Seats, Plugin Hybrid

Jeep Grand Cherokee Wheel

Jeep’s popular midsize SUV will be smarter, more practical and more fuel efficient.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has traditionally been a two-row, five passenger vehicle, but that’s going to change.

Sources that spoke with have revealed that the fifth generation Grand Cherokee will be offered with three rows of seats for the first time in model history.

Jeep could retain the midsize proportions of the Grand Cherokee and squeeze the third seats behind the second row, which would make them ideal for small children but uncomfortable for normal-sized adults.

Alternatively, the company has at least considered providing two distinct versions of the SUV, a five passenger setup with midsize proportions and  a seven passenger setup with a stretched wheelbase to better accommodate a third row.

As another first for the nameplate, the new Grand Cherokee will also offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain and autonomous driving technology.

FCA will convert an idled engine in Detroit to assemble the SUV, as well as revive the Mack Avenue Engine II, which hasn’t been used since 2012.

The plant will create 400 new jobs.
