Not only are electric vehicles poised to replace cars with internal combustion engines, but they are also expected to lead the biggest design revolution in automotive history. Just ask Jaguar head of design Ian Callum thinks so…
Even though Jaguar is in no rush to offer an EV, Callum believes cars of the future will not be restrained by powertrain packaging considerations like in the past, telling in an interview:
“By removing so much of the mechanical hardware and placing the batteries in the floorplan you open up all sorts of possibilities with packaging. The question is whether you make the cars smaller, but with the same interior space, or keep the cars the same size and offer more space – or perhaps both.”
Tesla Motors is one automaker already taking advantage of these benefits, with their new Model 3 offering more interior and cargo space than any other vehicle its size. Like the Model S, it has both front and rear trunks.
Callum suggests that the world’s automakers will eventually demonstrate much more styling freedom than exhibited by the Model 3 and other current EVs, pointing to Jaguar’s own C-X75 concept (pictured) as an example.
The British supercar was originally conceived as an EV but was later re-engineered to use a conventional powertrain. According to reports, its styling will be a source of inspiration for an upcoming, all-electric Jaguar SUV.

Jaguar Land Rover Adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto To Its Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity will now be available on its vehicles, starting with select 2019 models.
For the 2019 model year, all vehicles equipped with the British automaker’s InControl Touch Pro or Touch Pro Duo infotainment systems with navigation, InControl Apps, and Wi-Fi connectivity are available with the Smartphone Pack, either as a port- or factory-installed. The I-Pace electric SUV (pictured) comes standard with the connectivity.
Speaking of the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, it has received a few updates to coincide with the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, gaining voice command for the navigation system, refreshed graphics, and more shortcut buttons.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were introduced in 2014 and 2015, respectively. It’s about time Jaguar Land Rover got with the program.
Jaguar Is Turning All Its Cars Into Electric Vehicles?
The i-Pace was just the beginning — Jaguar is preparing to go steadfast after Tesla.
British automaker Jaguar Land Rover has shifted its electrification offensive into high gear, with a new report claiming it is considering going all electric by 2020.
According to , the company’s product planners have put together a strategy that calls for every single one of Jaguar’s fossil fuel-powered models to be replaced with electric vehicles within the next five to seven years.
The XJ will be the first to make the transition and will offer a purely-electric version aimed squarely at the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S when its replacement goes on sale by 2020.
In response to the declining car segment, the XE and the XF will be merged into a single model in 2023, possibly taking the form of an electric SUV in the vein of the Audi e-tron, while next-generation I-Pace could replace both the F-Pace and E-Pace in 2025.
Production of the F-Type is slated to end during the first half of the 2020s, and its replacement will go electric, as well, although an earlier report claims it could instead return with a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 borrowed from BMW.
That would leave the J-Pace full-size SUV as the brand’s non-electric model until it is eventually replaced by an electric model at around 2027.
If the plan is approved, Jaguar expects to sell around 300,000 cars annually once the transition to an electric-only lineup is complete and production is ramped up.
Next Jaguar F-Type Might Use BMW V8 Engine
The F-Type replacement is becoming more mysterious by the day.
There has been many speculations about what Jaguar has planned for the next-generation F-Type. Earlier reports claimed it could switch to a mid-engine layout that would make it a closer rival to the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, and now a new report states it will retain its front-engine configuration but will use a BMW engine.
According to , the British sports car will swap its current supercharged 5.0L V8 for BMW’s 4.4L V8, the same engine that powers the new 8 Series.
The magazine also speculates that the next F-Type will be a little bigger than the current model, possibly allowing it to have two rear seats, but lighter thanks the use of more aluminum in its construction. And with a 2+2 layout, it could be re-positioned as a Porsche 911 rival.
As for the F-Type potentially being renamed the J-Type as previously reported, that name might actually be used for a second sports car that will adopt a mid-engined layout.
All of this sounds interesting, but with Jaguar has remaining mum on the matter, we’ll have to wait and see if any of these ever-changing reports prove accurate.
