General Motors has revealed the all-new, 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, which is not only bigger than the previous Cruze, but also sleeker, lighter and more high-tech. There is a lot more to love about the American compact sedan.

More visually dynamic than the previous model, the new Cruze adopts many of the same styling cues as the similarly-new Malibu and Volt, featuring a sharper front end and a sleeker, more elongated profile. It’s more attractive than the China-market Cruze that was unveiled in 2015.

GM’s engineers lowered the car’s body by almost one inch (25 mm) and increased its length by 2.7 inches (68 mm). Its wheelbase stands at 106.3 inches (2700 mm), which the company says is best-in-segment.

Despite growing in size, the 2016 Cruze manages to be 250 lbs (113 kg) lighter than the first-generation model and benefits from a 27 percent stiffer body. Hours of wind tunnel tuning has granted it an impressive 0.29 drag coefficient.

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is powered by an all-new turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 153 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm, all of which is sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a respectable eight seconds.

When equipped with the six-speed automatic, the 2016 Cruze will returns an estimated 40 mpg in the United States (48 mpg UK or 5.8 liters / 100 km) in highway driving, making it one of the most fuel-efficient, non-hybrid cars money can buy.

An even more fuel-efficient diesel model will be offered later on in 2017, details of which will be announced closer to launch.

The simple yet tasteful interior is also stylistically-inspired by the Volt’s and, thanks to the longer wheelbase, offers two inches more knee and legroom for rear passengers. It comes nicely-equipped with Chevrolet’s capable MyLink infotainment system, which features a 7-inch-diagonal color touchscreen and is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Those looking for more tech goodies have the option of MyLink radio with an 8-inch display and a navigation system compatible with Apple CarPlay.

The long list of standard features also includes 10 airbags, disc brakes on all four corners, and a rearview camera, while safety technologies like Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert and Forward Collision Alert are part of the options list.

The all-new, 2015 Chevrolet Cruze competes against the likes of the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Jetta. Did it come to the compact sedan war prepared?

If Lamborghini, Porsche and, soon, Ferrari can have an SUV, why should Corvette?

Bob Lutz, the iconic automotive curmudgeon who helped shape BMW, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, believes General Motors has a great opportunity to take the Corvette nameplate upmarket with a Porsche Cayenne-like Corvette SUV that starts at $100,000.

Speaking to Automotive News, the former GM executive argued that Corvette is facing the same problem as Harley Davidson in that its baby boomer client base is dying out, meaning the brand is going to need a lot more than a traditional sports car like the new C8 Corvette to remain viable.

“The owner body is getting older and older and older, and there are no young people coming in,” Lutz said, adding that while he doesn’t believe Cadillac has any space to go upmarket, the Corvette brand does.

As for specifics about the Corvette SUV, he suggested that General Motors develop a dedicated architecture that’s super lightweight and powerful, envision something “Porsche Cayenne-like, only much better and a little bigger.” It will be a medium volume model with a starting price of $100,000, and it should never be offered with a V6 or as a low-cost offering.

The thought of a Corvette SUV might be offensive to some hardcore fans, but the times have changed and SUVs and crossovers are what make or break virtually every aspiring automaker.

The marketplace has also proven that there’s space for powerful, performance-oriented SUVs. From the Lamborghini Urus to the under-development Ferrari SUV and Lotus SUV, everyone’s getting in on the high-margin, sporty SUV game.

Lutz is not the first to make such an argument, and he likely won’t be the last. It will be interesting to see what will follow the C8 Corvette.

Was Chevy’s muscle car revived only to die again?

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro may be the last Camaro, at least for the foreseeable future.

According to Muscle Cars and Trucks, General Motors has stopped work on the seventh generation Camaro and has no plan to take the Camaro nameplate beyond the 2023 model year.

The sixth-gen Camaro is based on the same Alpha platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS sedan and coupe. However, while the ATS’ successor (the new CT4) uses the next generation Alpha platform, there are no plans for the Camaro to make the same transition.

Sales of the Camaro have declined significantly over the past few years, which is unfortunate considering how good of a sports car it is. The fifth generation Camaro took off after debuting in 2009, selling over 80,000 Camaros every year. But despite getting rave reviews from critics, the sixth-gen saw its sales drop to 51,000 units in 2018, which was a whopping 25 percent decline from the prior year.

Supposing the report is true, this won’t be the first time the Camaro has gone on hiatus. There was a seven-year gap between the fourth- and fifth-generation models.

Don’t have 60 seconds to phone in a pizza order? This is for you.

General Motors has updated the infotainment systems on Chevrolet vehicles with a new Domino’s pizza ordering tool.

As part of the American automaker’s growing in-car Marketplace ecosystem, the app lets drivers place orders for carryout or home delivery using the in-vehicle touchscreen interface and Chevrolet Marketplace portal.

It would be too distracting and downright unsafe if the system let you configure an entire pizza from scratch, so you are limited to just saved and recent orders.

General Motors has been steadily growing Marketplace since its launch in 2017. In April 2018, Chevrolet partnered with Shell to allow in-car gas purchases, sparing you the trouble of using the gas pump’s magnetic reader and being the victim of credit card skimming. In November of the same year, Buick added Yelp compatibility to its infotainment system, allowing you to make restaurant reservations on the go.

The new Domino’s app works with any 2017 model year or newer Chevrolet vehicle that runs Marketplace.
