Acura NSX Type-R Could be Acura’s Answer to the Ford GT

Red Acura NSX hybrid supercar

Two supercars limelighted the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but only one stole the show — the new Ford GT! Not to be outdone, the new Acura NSX has been confirmed to be getting an even hotter variant — the NSX Type-R — possibly in response to the GT, Corvette Z06 and other standout supercars.

The NSX hybrid’s last minute change from a transverse naturally-aspirated V6 to a new longitudinally-mounted, twin-turbo V6 apparently makes room for an even more powerful engine.

“I think everyone who loves cars wants to see a version that we say is pure red,” chief engineer Ted Klaus told regarding a higher performing NSX.

It will be a year or two before we see the NSX Type-R, especially when considering Acura hasn’t even released full technical specifications for the standard model. All we know so far is that the stock NSX produces at least 550 horsepower compared to the GT supercar’s 600 HP and is priced around $150,000.

Acura’s small luxury sedan hopes to attract Millenials with a bold new face and new tech.

The aggressive look extends to the rear fascia, where one sees new LED taillights and a new lower diffuser. A set of new standard 17-inch wheels top things off.

For those who want their ILX to stand out even more, the ILX A-Spec adds dark chrome trim to the front grille and lower fascia, LED fog lights, darkened headlights and taillights, a gloss-black decklid spoiler, and Shark Gray 18-inch wheels.

The interior of the ILX A-Spec is distinguished by a graphite-silver dash accent with chrome insert, an A-Spec badged steering wheel with contrast stitching, aluminum sport pedals, and Ebony or Red leather with black Ultrasuede center panels.

It addition to the styling upgrades, the 2019 Acura ILX also introduces tech features like the AcuraWatch driver assistance technology and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Power continues to be provided by a 201-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission.

Your NSX will be less invisible.

The Acura NSX has received a few updates for the 2019 model year, which includes a few minor styling updates, drivetrain and chassis improvements, and the introduction of the new Thermal Orange Pearl exterior paint color.

On the outside, the hybrid supercar dons a new body-color front grille garnish, and high-gloss trim on the grille surround, front air intake mesh and rear bumper outlet mesh. The Thermal Orange Pearl paint is a $700 option and pays tribute to Acura’s race cars.

The interior is available with an Indigo blue Semi-aniline leather and Alcantara theme, while the optional semi-aniline leather seats can now be selected in Red or Ebony. Power sport seats, navigation, ELS Studio premium audio, front and rear proximity sensors, and aluminum sport pedals join the list of standard features.

Acura’s engineers tweaked the hybrid powertrain’s software to make the NSX more responsive on road and track and upgraded the chassis with larger front and rear stabilizer bars and stiffer rear toe link bushings. Grippier Continental SportContact 6 tires (Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires are optional) should help drivers post quicker lap times.

In fact, Acura says the updates make the NSX a full two seconds faster around the Suzuka Grand Prix track in Japan.

In the U.S., the 2019 Acura NSX starts at $157,500, making it $1,500 more than the 2018 model. Deliveries begin in October 2018.

New Acura NSX- Supercar

There have been rumors of a hotter Type-R version of the Acura NSX ever since the the second-generation model hit the market in 2016.

Acura’s vice president and general manager Jon Ikeda previously hinted at the idea of an NSX Type-R, and now a new report claims it could arrive in 2020.

In an interview with , he expressed a strong desire to see the car but stopped short of confirming anything:

“I’m a car guy, so always faster performance vehicles… yeah we like that, we talk about it. We’ll see… anything can happen. “There’s always proposals.”

There are speculations that NSX Type-R could have up to 641 horsepower, which is a nice bump over the standard NSX’s 573-hp.

The Australia outlet claims it has been approved for development and that it will debut sometime in 2019 before arriving in 2020, but because we haven’t heard it from Acura’s own mouth, we’ll have to wait and see what’s speeding our way, if anything.
