Sales of the Fiat 500L have been so poor that Fiat has temporarily stopped production at its plant in Kragujevac, Serbia.

As a more practical alternative to the cute 500 hatchback, the Fiat 500L MPV has failed to meet sales expectations since going on sale in July 2012.

“The causes of this temporary setback are external and related to situation in the European and global automotive markets,” the Italian automaker said in a statement.

The 500L is not the only MPV feeling the effects of a contraction in Europe’s compact MPV segment. In 2013, Ford halted assembly of the B-MAX in Romania for around 35 days. With sales remaining poor in 2014, the American automaker stopped assembly once again for nine days.

Fiat did not say how long 500L production will be halted, but Serbian media indicated it will last nearly a week, if not longer. How many of the little Italian MPV have you seen in your area?

Yes, the 500L is still sold in North American, and it’s just gotten darker.

Fiat has brought back the Urbana Edition for the 2019 500L Trekking trim in hopes of enticing more people to buy the ostensibly forgotten five-door, five passenger MPV.

Outside, the 500L Urbana Edition comes with a blackout theme complete with dark 17-inch aluminum wheels, door handles, body-side moldings, fog lamps, side mirrors and fascias.

Buyers can choose from five exterior paint colors — Black, Bronzo Metallizato bronze, Bianco white, Grigio Scuro gray, and Verde Bosco green — four of which can be matched with a black contrasting roof.

Inside, the dashboard dons a copper 500 logo and the seats are upholstered in black leather with copper contrast stitching.

Power for the 500L Trekking comes exclusively from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower (119 kilowatts) and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters) of torque, transmitted to the wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 500L has struggled to find success in the United States. Last year, Fiat delivered just 1,413 units in all of 2018, representing a 15 percent drop from the volume in 2017.

Deliveries of the Fiat 500L Urbana Edition begin in spring 2019, with pricing starting at $23,920. Have you been enticed to get one?

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed that it’s working on a new 500e, one built on a dedicated small Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform that that will provide better all-around performance.

The Fiat 500e is arguably the cutest electric vehicle market on the market, but it was built to comply with U.S. fleet fuel economy standards and not necessarily to sell en masse. Things will likely be different with the second generation model. stated:

“Mirafiori will represent the first installation of a full BEV platform applied on the new Fiat 500, capable of scaling to other applications worldwide,” stated FCA CEO Mike Manley. “Additional investments across our Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat brands will realize the benefits of existing plant capacity as well as scale and sourcing efficiencies from a common vehicle architecture, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric propulsion (PHEV) system, while preserving traits unique to the brands.”

Not much else is known about the next Fiat 500e, but it’s likely to remain a cute electric vehicle. What are you hoping to see?

Health complications has forced Sergio Marchionne to step down from his post as Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s CEO. He has been replaced by Mike Manley effective immediately.

Marchionne had been recovering from shoulder surgery for some months, but a deterioration in his condition has rendered him incapable of running the automaker effectively.

FCA did not elaborate, but having served as FCA CEO since 2004, the former tax account oversaw a controversial tenure that included the acquisition of Chrysler during the 2008 global financial crisis, saving it from bankruptcy; the reintroduction of the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands to North America; spinning off Ferrari; and killing off Chrysler’s passenger cars,

Marchionne was expected to retire at age 66 in 2019. His replacement, Manley was previously the boss of FCA’s Jeep and Ram brands and assumes all powers of the CEO by the board of directors. John Elkann will become chairman at Ferrari, a post Marchionne was expected to hold in until 2021.
