Hacking a Tesla Model S is apparently very easy, but chances are most people couldn’t do it. For those that think they can, there is a hacking contest taking place in China that might interest you. The person that can do the most damage to the electric car is eligible to win $10,000 and piles of swag.

Hacking competitions are not as uncommon as you might think, as many big tech companies and governments sponsor so-called “hackathons” to probe their systems for potential security issues. However, in this instance, Tesla itself is not involved in the Model S hacking contest, nor is it sponsoring it.

The event will take place between July 16 and 17 at the SyScan conference in Beijing, where contestants will have access to computers to do their work. If you think you have what it takes home the big prize, sign up here.

The American automaker is hoping that all security flaws found during the competition will be directed to its engineers so that they fix them as soon as possible.

Lotus Evija Electric Supercar

There is a new electric hypercar speeding into town, and it has nearly 2,000 horsepower.

Lotus has unveiled its latest creation, the Evija electric hypercar.

Billed as the world’s first pure electric British hypercar, the Evija (pronounced E-vi-ya) is powered by four electric motors that generate a combined “target output” of 2,000PS (1,973 horsepower), which should make it the most powerful series production road car ever built if the British sports car maker successfully delivers that lofty output figure.

The Evija electric hypercar stays true to the brand’s ethos of making lightweight, fun-to-drive cars. It’s made out of carbon fiber and weighs just 3,700 pounds, which although heavy for a Lotus, is light for an EV, especially one with a 2,000 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The battery provides a driving range of around 250 miles (402 km) and is mid-mounted just like the engines in Lotus’ normal cars. Once depleted, it can be recharged fully in a mere nine minutes when using a 800 kW charger and up to 90 percent capacity in only 12 minutes when using a 350 kWh charger.

Lotus says the Evija can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (96 km/h) in under 3 seconds, to 124 mph (200 km/h) in around 6 seconds, and to 186 mph (299 km/h) in less than 9 seconds. Top speed is expected to be around 200 mph (322 km/h).

“The Lotus Evija is a car like no other,” said Phil Popham, CEO of Lotus. “It will re-establish our brand in the hearts and minds of sports car fans and on the global automotive stage. It will also pave the way for further visionary models.”

Only 130 units of the Lotus Evija will be built, each costing a $2.1 million in the United States or £1.7m duties and taxes in Europe when sales begin in 2020. Buyers are required to make a $310,000 deposit.

The model will be developed and built in China by Great Wall and sold around the world.

Not long after unveiling its first all-electric, the Cooper SE, MINI might already be working on its second electric vehicle.

According to senior source at BMW that spoke with Autocar, the British automaker has approved the Rocketman concept for production. The new model will be built in China as part of a partnership between BMW and Great Wall Motors and should arrive by 2022.

“We’re advancing plans for a model along the lines of the Rocketman,” the source stated. “It’s a car we have been looking at for a long time, but to build it profitably at the price point we think customers are prepared to pay, you need a joint venture partner to share costs. Great Wall Motors has provided that opportunity with a shared electric car platform that will be used by Mini”

Ora R1 Electric Car

Although production will take place in China, MINI’s new electric car will be sold worldwide. Autocar speculates it will be a variation of the Ora R1, an electric car that’s cheaper than any new car sold in North America.

The cute little Ora R1 (pictured immediately above) looks like a Honda E and Smart ForFour hybrid. It is powered by an electric drivetrain that consists of an 30.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor rated at 47 horsepower and 92 pound-feet of torque, though buyers have the option of a bigger, 33-kilowatt-hour pack.

Mini hasn’t made anything official, but if the report is accurate, expect a vehicle that looks little like the Rocketman.
