The all-new Cadillac CTS has won Motor Trend’s 2014 Car of the Year award, one of the auto industry’s most prestigious honors.

In Motor Trend’s Car of the Year competition, contending vehicles are first put through a full battery of performance tests to measure acceleration, braking, and limit handling. They are then evaluated on three separate courses at a professional automotive test center, as well as on a real-world road loop, using six key criteria as a basis of comparison — Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Safety, Value and Performance of Intended Function.

To take home the top award, the new CTS beat out the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 4 Series and Mazda3. The judges especially liked the premium sedan’s responsive powertrains and masterful balance of smooth ride and sporty handling.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS is offered with three powertrains — a standard 272-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit, a 321-hp naturally aspirated V6, and a 420-hp 3.6-liter Twin-Turbo V6 available only on the CTS Vsport. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional.

The rear-wheel-drive CTS Vsport is the first model to receive Cadillac’s new eight-speed automatic transmission.

“The all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan delivers crafted design, thrilling performance and sophisticated technology,” said Bob Ferguson, General Motors’ senior vice president of Global Cadillac. “With Cadillac growing globally, driven by rising product credibility, the new CTS elevates the brand to a new level.”

The Buick Avista Concept is still being talked about long after its debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. In fact, so enamored are auto critics by the two-door Buick’s striking, eye-catching design that it was named Concept Car of the Year and Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2016 at the 2016 North American Concept Vehicle Awards ceremony held at Concours d’Elegance of America.

The awards recognize one vehicle that made the strongest impact in terms of automotive design, engineering and market responsiveness.

More than just a one-off eye-candy, the Avista not only celebrates Buick’s “deep design heritage” but also previews the brand’s future design direction. Bryan Nesbitt, executive director of Buick Global Design, had the following to say:

“The design process of the Avista brought the team together to unite around a future direction for the brand and the great teamwork and enthusiasm it generated. While looking to the future, we also wanted to honor the rich heritage of Buick by integrating timeless design cues in this beautifully progressive concept vehicle.”

The Avista was praised for its futuristic interior and intuitive design, with Detroit Free Press auto critic Mark Phelan saying it “cements Buick’s surprising status as one of the auto industry’s most intriguing brands.”

In addition to being named Concept Car of the Year and Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2016, the gorgeous coupe also received the EyesOn Design Excellence and “Best Future Concept” awards following its introduction at the North American International Auto Show.

Is the Buick Avista deserving of all these awards or is there a better choice? Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments below.
