Ram 1500 Pickup Named Truck of Texas

2013 Ram 1500

The Ram 1500 pickup has won another accolade, becoming the “Truck of Texas” for the third time in four years.

The 1500 won the award in 2013 and 2011, having conceded the title to the Ford F-Series in 2012. It was the availability of a new diesel engine, the first offered in a modern half-tonne truck, that helped nudge it above the fully-redesigned Chevrolet Silverado range and heavily updated Toyota Tundra lineup.

In fact, the Ram lineup was so dominant at the Texas Truck Rodeo that, in addition to winning the overall truck title, it also won “Full-size Truck of Texas,” “Heavy Duty Truck of Texas,” “Luxury Truck of Texa,” “Truck Line of Texas,” and shared the “Best Powertrain” title with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Needless to say, Texas loves its Ram trucks.

Elsewhere in the Chrysler Group, the Jeep Grand Cherokee won “SUV of Texas” for the fourth consecutive year, while the Dodge Durango took home “Full-size SUV of Texas” for the second time in three years. Like the Ram lineup, Jeep Brand SUVs won the highest honors in every category entered. A complete list of all of Chrysler’s winners are as follows:

Ram 1500 Adds More Versatility With New Split Tailgate

Rram 1500 Multifunction Tailgate, opened

It can fold like a traditional tailgate, or swing open like double door.

Not to be outdone by the GMC Sierra’s multi-function tailgate and even the Ford F-150’s simpler ‘Man Step’ setup, Ram has given it’s 1500 pickup truck a new split tailgate option that should provide a owners some added versatility.

The aptly-named “Ram Multifunction Tailgate” is essentially a standard tailgate that can be swung open in a 60/40 fashion. It still drops down like a traditional tailgate, but users are also able to lower a single side of the unit. See it in action…

“The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand – FCA. “Combined with Ram’s class-exclusive RamBox feature and new tailgate step, we’re taking Ram’s cargo management and storage to the next level.”

The doors also swing open nearly 90 degrees, allowing easier access to the truck’s bed. Moreover, the split opening function can be used when trailering, and despite the added complexity, the tailgate has a 2,000 pound load rating.

The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is a $995 option that will be available across the entire 1500 pickup truck lineup starting in the second quarter of 2019.

New Ram 1500 Aces Crash Test, But Fails To Get Top Safety Pick Rating

New, 2019 RAM 1500 IIHS Crash test

It missed out on the coveted rating because seemingly innocuous oversight.

Make no mistake, the all-new, 2019 Ram 1500 is a very safe pickup truck. It aced nearly all of the Insurance Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s six crashworthiness tests, including the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, passenger-side small overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints tests, whereas the previous generation Ram 1500 received a less impressive marginal rating in the driver-side small overlap front test and the roof strength test.

Unfortunately, it missed out on the coveted Top Safety Pick rating because its best available headlights earned only a marginal rating.

It’s worth noting that the IIHS introduced the passenger-side small overlap test in 2017, and 2019 Ram 1500 is the first pickup to undergo and, thus, ace the test. It’s optional front crash prevention system also earned a superior rating, helping avoid crashes at 12 mph and 25 mph as tested.

Does a marginal rating for the headlights deter you from getting the new RAM 1500? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
