Mazda is betting a lot on its all-new CX-5 compact crossover. Completely built around the Japanese automaker’s new SKYACTIV technology package, the small crossover is already becoming a hit with critics. However, the success of any car is determined by the masses, and gauging by the reaction of Japanese buyers, Mazda might possibly have a hit on its hands.

Since the CX-5’s launch in Japan early in the year, Mazda has received approximately 8,000 bookings, eight times more than the anticipated 1,000 units. Accounting for 73 percent of all orders, the diesel model — compared to the gasoline model — looks to be a crowd favorite.

But that’s not the surprising bit: All of those bookings came in before the start of the company’s customer test drive program, which begins at the end of March in Japan. One can imagine how successful the CX-5 will be once it hits the market full force.

Mazda is likely hoping for such success, assuming it will last for several years, in all the markets the CX-5 will be sold, but given their lack of popularity on this side of the Pacific, the diesel-equipped models will likely not register with North American buyers. All eyes will be on the gasoline model.

The Korean premium marque is moving very quickly with its electrification program.

Genesis has confirmed that it’s first electric car will release in 2021, and it will be based on an all-new EV platform.

In an interview with Australia’s Drive, the company confirmed that its first electric car is almost here. While it’s not exactly known what form the model will take, the company is believed to be working on both a sedan and SUV to compete with Tesla head-on, and a production version of the Mint hatchback concept (pictured) is also reportedly in the pipeline.

Genesis is expected to even utilize parent company Hyundai’s world-leading hydrogen technology for a number of fuel cell vehicles to complement its lineup of battery-powered vehicles.

“We are very well positioned with alternative technologies. For now we are focused on the near term,” Manfred Fitzgerald, global boss of the Genesis brand stated. “In 2021 we have our first fully dedicated new EV platform… We are moving very fast on this.”

It’s a global vehicle, but will it be sold in North America?

Kia Motors used an event in Delhi India to unveil the Kia Seltos, a new compact SUV that will be sold in several markets around the world.

Positioned at the bottom of the company’s expanding crossover and SUV line-up, the new Seltos goes after “youthful, tech-savvy buyers” with a sharp design inside and out, and the tech and practicality millennials expect in vehicle of its size.

The exterior features a tall, upright front end characterized by a wide rendition of Kia’s trademark tiger nose grille flanked by LED headlights and 3D indicators, while horizontal lines on both ends help make the crossover look bigger than it actually is. It looks like a Kia.

Inside, the Seltos can be equipped with a 10.25-inch screen for the infotainment system, a head-up display, and ambient lighting that pulses to the beat of the music. A split-screen function let’s users customize the infotainment screen and view up to three menus at the same time.

Power can be provided by a 1.6-liter turbodiesel rated at 136 horsepower, a naturally-aspirated, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 149 horsepower, or a 177-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo four, while the gearbox options consist of a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a six-speed automatic, and a seven-speed dual-clutch.

Manufactured in both India and South Korea, the new, 2020 Kia Seltos goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2019. It’s not clear if it will be sold in the United States and Canada.

TRIVIA: The name Seltos comes from Greek mythology, particularly Hercules’ son Celtos. To make it appear sportier, Kia simply replaced the ‘C’ with an ‘S’.

The Venue has the style, content and substance to be a big sales winner.

Unveiled at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the all-new Hyundai Venue is a small SUV that’s dressed up to win, offering buyers plenty of style inside and out, a comprehensive suite of safety and convenience technologies, and the everyday versatility SUVs are known for, and all at an affordable price.

The Venue comes with an all-encompassing suite of advanced safety technologies to help keep driver and passengers safe on the road. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, and Rear Collision Cross-Traffic Warning all help to ease the anxiety of driving in heavily congested areas, while Lane Keeping Assist and a Driver Attention Warning system detect when you’re not paying attention or suffering from fatigue, helping ensure you’re alert alert and in the right lane.

The tech features extend into the Venue’s interior, which comes with an 8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3.5” TFT instrument cluster display, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and real-Time Traffic when you opt for the available navigation system.

Models equipped with remote-start benefit from Hyundai Blue Link integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing you to remotely start the car and operate climate control functions by simply inputting your Blue Link Personal Identification Number into either app.

The Venue is powered by Hyundai’s fuel-efficient Smartstream Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The Dual-Port Fuel Injection engine received several design changes to increase fuel efficiency, including an Integrated Thermal Management System, Maximized Thermal Efficiency, and Cooling System Optimization.

The engine can be mated to either an Intelligent Variable Transmission automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission, and Hyundai estimates a combined city / highway fuel economy of up to 33 miles per gallon in the United States.

New, 2020 Hyundai Venue Small SUV, cargo area

Seeing as the Venue is an SUV, expect lots of cargo space for a car its size. Each version of the Venue comes standard with a 60/40-split flat-folding backseat that makes it easy to make room for extra luggage or that cute piece of furniture you’re trying to bring home. The cargo area floor also features two levels — one is flush with the base of the seats and the other sits at a lower position to allow you to fit taller items. A rear covering shelf keeps your valuables hidden from prying eyes.

Curious as to why Hyundai gave their latest SUV the name Venue? We asked our friends at Winner Hyundai (Dover, DE) and they said that “a venue is typically somewhere people want to be seen in” and the all-new 2020 Venue is definitely ‘the place to be’ while you’re on your way to your next destination.
